MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide unusual in that it's encoded within mitochondrial DNA rather than nuclear DNA. It's studied as a regulator of cellular metabolism and has been called an "exercise mimetic" because the body's own skeletal-muscle MOTS-c levels rise sharply with physical exertion.
In one human study, skeletal muscle MOTS-c concentrations rose roughly 11.9-fold after a single bout of acute exercise. In diet-induced obese mouse models, administering MOTS-c was associated with improved insulin sensitivity, increased mitochondrial respiratory capacity, and favorable changes in body composition. Researchers studying MOTS-c are explicit that most mechanistic evidence remains in mice and cell culture, and that human exercise data doesn't establish what effects administering the peptide itself would have in people.
