ARA-290 (cibinetide) is a synthetic peptide derived from a surface region of erythropoietin, engineered to activate a tissue-protection and nerve-repair pathway without triggering erythropoietin's blood-cell-producing effects.
In a randomized, double-blind Phase 2 trial in 64 patients with sarcoidosis-associated small-fiber neuropathy, a tested dose produced a statistically significant increase in corneal nerve fiber density versus placebo, along with reductions in pain intensity in patients with moderate-to-severe baseline pain. Despite meeting these endpoints, no Phase 3 trial was ever run, and development stopped after the sponsoring company ceased operations.
