Glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide (γ-glutamylcysteinylglycine) produced in nearly every human cell, and the body's primary intracellular antioxidant, studied for its role in neutralizing reactive oxygen species and supporting detoxification pathways in the liver.
In a randomized trial in elderly adults with type 2 diabetes, six months of oral glutathione supplementation reduced markers of oxidative damage and improved HbA1c versus placebo. A separate pilot study found glutathione therapy reduced oxidative stress markers in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Reduced glutathione levels have also been studied as a marker in psychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions, though causal treatment effects in those areas remain under investigation.
