Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist evaluated in large, randomized, placebo-controlled human clinical trials (the STEP program), published in peer-reviewed journals including the New England Journal of Medicine.
In the STEP 1 trial, adults with overweight or obesity receiving weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg lost a mean 14.9% of body weight over 68 weeks versus 2.4% with placebo, with results sustained to two years in the STEP 5 trial. Related STEP trials reported body-weight reductions in participants with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction and with knee osteoarthritis, with lifestyle intervention included in all study arms.
