This is a combination of two individually studied cognitive-research peptides, each developed in Russia: Semax, a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone modified for stability and studied for its effect on BDNF and neurotrophin signaling; and Selank, a synthetic heptapeptide derived from tuftsin studied as a positive modulator of GABA-A receptors and investigated as a candidate anti-anxiety compound.
Each peptide has its own separate research base rather than the combination itself being independently studied. Semax increased BDNF gene expression in the hippocampus and frontal cortex in rodent studies and showed earlier neurotrophin upregulation in rat stroke models; Selank produced anxiety-score reductions comparable to the benzodiazepine medazepam in a randomized trial of 62 patients, without the sedation seen in the benzodiazepine group. No published study has evaluated Semax and Selank combined in a single preparation, and the literature on both compounds comes almost entirely from Russian research groups with limited independent Western replication.
